West District T&F Championships 12th & 13th May 2017
Greenock Glenpark Harriers had 6 juniors competing on Friday at the Ayrshire Arena in Kilmarnock on day 1 of the West District Track & Field Championships.
In the 1500m heats Harry McGill comfortably progressed to the final where he battled to 6th. While Ewan Ferguson showed the biggest improvement on the night knocking off 24 seconds from his time at the same event 12 months ago. Ryan Brown was into a straight final in the under 17s cutting 9 seconds from his best to finish 13th. On this strong showing he will undoubtedly start producing the results his hard work deserves. The only disappointment of the night was from Cameron Patton in the under 13s final. He was well placed with the main pack after 1 lap, but a severe cramp put paid to his hopes.
Mia Forrest and Beth McKenna had dropped down to the shorter distance for these championships and both posted quick times, with Mia finishing 7th in the final and Beth 6th in her heat.
On the Saturday the weather had changed drastically to cold and windy and overcast with heavy rain showers.
Returning after the previous evening’s exertions were Ryan Brown who was competing in the 800m, Mia Forrest in the 100m dash, and Beth McKenna taking on the tough 300m.
Despite their misgivings over the weather, it didn’t stop all 3 producing sterling performances. Ryan was first up and shattered his personal best over two laps of the track by 6 seconds. Mia in her first year as an U20, and also her first official 100m, stayed in contention throughout to finish 10th quickest out of the 2 heats. And finally after what seemed like a never ending wait, it was Beth’s turn to take to the track. She flew down the back straight and round the bend, but after 150m she hit a wall of wind but she kept her form and powered home to knock 1 second off her best.
