There could be no complaints about the weather at the National Short Course XC Championships in Kirkcaldy; sun and blue skies greeted the 13 junior and senior harriers who made the journey to the east coast event. The going was soft and the athletes faced an uphill start making it a fairly tough course.
First race of the day was the Under 15 Girls over a distance of 2km. Alyshia Singleton and Mhairi Moore have been competing more regularly this season and the improvements in performance are beginning to come through. On this occasion Alyshia getting the advantage on Mhairi.
Next up, was the Under 15 Boys race which had Harry McGill and Ewan Ferguson competing. Harry didn’t quite reach his normal high standards, but nonetheless he produced a solid run going under 7 minutes for the 2 kilometres. Junior run of the day however came from Ewan Ferguson who always thrives on competition, kept in contention with Harry finishing just 13 seconds behind.
Ryan Brown has been the unluckiest harrier in the last 2 seasons, with his training being interrupted with a series of injuries. In the Under 17 Men’s 3km race he returned again after his latest setback, and did more than expected, getting stronger as the race progressed, and showing the promise of much more to come.
In the Senior Women’s race, first home for Glenpark was Suzie Coyle in 18:27 for the 4km distance. Marianne Mckay put in a strong run with a time of 19:23. Eileen Stevenson and Nathalie Smith both showed signs they are improving over the season with their respective times of 21:37 and 22:16.
The performance of the day has to be from the in-form Mick McLoone. His time of 14:11 in the 4km Senior Men’s event earned him a Silver medal in the V50 category, only narrowly missing out on the gold in the closing stages or the race. Not far behind came Paul Monaghan who crossed the line in 14:41, 5th in the V45 category. Both Stephen Reid and Frank McMahon put in strong finishes with their times of 17:37 and 18:37.
