A firm and fast cross country course awaited the Harriers in Irvine for this year’s West District Cross Country Championships. The former racecourse provided a flat route for the runners on a crisp winter’s day.
Off the back of bronze medal success at the Renfrewshire Cross Country two week’s ago, the senior men targeted another successful day at the West District. With Stephen Trainer and Mick McLoone added to the ranks, the top 6 counters were able to take home 4th place overall on the 10k route. Stephen led the way in 11th overall position, narrowly missing out o a top 10 in a 4 way battle for the line which also included Inverclyde’s John Bell. Shaun Lyon was second home for the club, narrowly edging out Chris Mooney who continued his impressive comeback with his fastest 10k time of the season. Steven Campbell (5th v40), Andrew White and Mick McLoone made up the remaining counters with strong runs of their own. The later three runners made up the three counters for the masters team race, and finished in third place. The team narrowly missed out on second by only one position! However, with his run of 36.59, Mick McLoone finished second v50 on the day.
Elsewhere in the mens race, Captain John Stevenson was able to dip under the 40 minute mark. Derrick MacNish had a strong run in his first cross country race for the club. Frank McMahon was 3rd in his age category.
The ladies were very well represented on the day with 9 runners taking to the 4 mile course. The Christmas party season certainly didn’t stop our hardy Harriers from putting their sore heads to one side and getting on that club vest for a bit of XC!
Ladies Captain Marian Monk lead by example and was first home for the club. Second was Suzanne Coyle who was very closely followed by Nicola Stevenson. Nicola is continuing to improve as the season goes on, and this was a really great run from her! The ladies masters team was 6th overall with Marian Monk, Lorna Coyle and Marianne McKay making up the three counters. Lorna Coyle was 3rd v55, starting to show signs of the form that got her a Scotland vest last year.
There were 4 junior runners who finished their races on the day. It was a tough shift for the Glenpark youngsters on a bitter cold day. Don’t forget the Junior cross country league is continuing right up until the Nationals in February. Keep and eye on the Facebook and website for more information.
