Lanzarote International Running Challenge Day 2

The second race of the series was a 13k multi-terrain hill run. Again, the temperatures were hot and this time the race included a climb of around 450ft, with very sandy conditions underfoot.

The course started off with a slight downhill incline for the first kilometre, then a 100ft climb over the next 2 kilometres, then a level rocky road for 1 kilometre to the foot of a 3 kilometre uphill climb of another 350ft.

Steven Campbell (55:09) had a great run, reaching the top in 24th place from the 193 male starters. Steven moved from 7th to 5th in his age group in the latter stages.

Behind Steven, Campbell Cromar (1:03:11) again took up the pace after the first kilometre, opening up a decent gap on Danny McLaughlin (1:01:18) going into the climb. However, Danny managed to catch him at the top of the hill and with 5km to go opened up a gap of nearly 2 minutes on the way back to the finish. This time the positions were reversed, with Danny finishing 2nd and Campbell 3rd  in the M60-64 age group.

Next in was Alan O’Rourke (1:07:15) in the M50-54 category. Alan was pipped by 1 second in the previous race by Graham McGrattan, who had a terrific sprint finish. However this time Alan managed to gradually open up a 2 minute gap on Graham (1:09:18) by the finish.

There was just over a minute between Jim Cuffe (1:12:36), running for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Robin McAuslan (1:13:49) who finished 12th and 14th respectively in the M60-64 category. Kenny Scott (1:23:50) finished 17th of the 29 starters in their category.

In the M65-69 category Graham McGrattan finished 4th, moving up 2 places from 6th over the course of the race.

The next race in the series is the 5km beach run…
