Greenock Glenpark Harriers Summer Round Up
Some of the happenings over the last wee while. I’ve definitely missed races. I’ve definitely missed folk from races. I’ve definitely missed some cracker pictures of folk. Like most places there was a reduced service during the holidays so apologies if ones of the misses was you or your event it was not intentional or on purpose. En Avant
Scottish Veteran Harriers Club Relay
The Scottish Veteran Harriers Club relay is generally a popular event in the winter calendar in January but with ice ensuring that the course fell foul to cancellation on safety grounds the organisers were left trying to find a gap in the racing schedule to ensure it was able to go ahead at some point. A date of the 11th July 2025 was agreed and only 3 hardy Harriers made the journey to Strathclyde Country Park. Nathalie Smith, Viki Smith and Jill Aikman ensured that the famous yellow and blue vest would be represented in the race. The course is a flat out and back 6km relay which sounds easy but in temperatures of almost 30 degrees it was anything but, ironic given the original reason for postponement. Nathalie ran first and set the ball rolling in a good 31min 20s with Viki running the middle leg in a great time of 29min 17s and Jill anchored the team home with another strong run of 29min and 1s. Hopefully next year there will be more GGH teams entered, which would be expected when it returns to its’ usual pl;ace in the calendar.
John Logan K12 Ultra Marathon
John Logan recently raced at the K12 Ultra Marathon. The K12 Ultra Marathon takeplaces at Deans Castle Country Park. consists of a 4km circular route with mixed terrain, including some challenging inclines and steeps descents. There are two races on the day with a 6 hour option and a more gruelling 12 hour option. John is at his happiest over longer endurance events and in his 12 hours completed 31 full laps. A quite remarkable distance covered in the end of 116.37km.
A great result for John and also and opporunity to congratulate John on his recent marriage and the chanceafter the race to get away for a wee mini- moon.

Huge congratulations to John Hampsey
Montane Lakeland 50
Two of Greenock Glenpark Harriers Ultra legends travelled south for the Lakeland 50 race. Viki Smith and Lorna Mitchell are no strangers to intrepid days and weekends on the trails. The race description reads as follows
The Lakeland 50 is one the greatest ultra trail challenges in Europe, perhaps the world. It is run over the second half of the Lakeland 100 Ultra Tour of the Lake District, completing the final 50 miles of the 100 course. As it’s only half of the Lakeland 100 course it’s the easy option.. right? That’s the first and worst error you could possibly make. It’s a fact that 40-50% of the 100 mile competitors don’t finish the course, 80-90% of those drop out prior to or ‘at’ half way. Many great ultra runners have started the 100 course and found it just too difficult, too demanding.. half of the course was ‘enough’. The Lakeland 50 is ‘half of the course’, it’s almost double the distance of a marathon, it’s on rough terrain and there’s almost 3000m of ascent to deal with. Whether you choose the 50 or the 100 mile course.. there is no ‘easy option’ available. The Lakeland 50 is a huge challenge, it requires commitment, drive and the ability to ‘just keep going’ when most folk would ‘just rather not’.
That being taken into account and Lorna ‘not really meant to be back running yet’ Mitchell and Viki ‘Let’s run round Menorca for a bit of fun’ Smith had a great day out and completed the course in 15.51 and 14.09 respectively.
