Saturday 11th July 2026 – The penultimate round of the 25/26 Championship delivered exactly what we’ve come to expect from the annual trip to the Isle of Bute. Some decent weather for running, the famous tractor trailer ride to the start line, the terrors of the steepest hill climb on the club calendar, being pursued by horse flies and most of all some outstanding performances out on the course.
A special thanks as ever owed to Shaun Lyon and his family. Their hospitality once again turned the day into something special. And to every volunteer, marshal, family member and unsuspecting friend who found themselves “press‑ganged” into duty – you made the day happen!
The race is a mix of road, trail and hills in a looped course, and the huge elevation in the middle to final section makes it a real test for all taking part. Thirty seniors lined up for the full 5k route, and eight juniors took on the 3k which avoids the hill section. In the senior ladies race, Jennifer Rooney continues her return to full race fitness to take first place ahead of Lynne Harrison and Marian Monk. No surprise in the men’s event, with local runner Dee Waka coming close to the course record in first place, running the event for the first time. In second, host Shaun Lyon had a strong race to finish ahead of Paul Monaghan in third.
After the race it was back to Shaun’s Farm after the race for a well deserved rest in the sunshine! Next up, the final club race of the 25/26 season, the Bill Elder 10k on Friday 7th August.
