Despite the autumn chill and a dramatic turn in the weather, an incredible 52 juniors took to the track tonight for the Junior Colin Shields Endurance Race, which showed grit, determination, and what it means to be a harrier.
The event was split into four age-grouped races, from Under 10s to Under 14s and above. Note that the races had a wide range of ages in each event.
The Under 10 and Under 12 Girls kicked off the evening with a fast-paced 800m, where Lauryn McLaughlin delivered a standout performance, giving an even paced run and crossing the line in a blistering 2:39. In the boys’ 800m race of the same age group, Elijah Taylor led the pack with a superb time of 2:36.
As the evening progressed, the older juniors took on the challenge of the mile. In the Under 14 and above Girls’ race, Stella McCabe set the tone sprinting off and finishing in 6:02. The boys’ mile followed, and just as the final laps began, the skies opened. Torrential rain poured down, but it didn’t dampen spirits. Josh Deegan powered through the downpour to claim victory in a phenomenal 5:05.
There were stellar performances across the board, with many juniors stepping up to race for Glenpark for the very first time and for some, it was their first ever race!
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all the parents and carers who braved the weather to support their young athletes, and to our dedicated volunteer coaches, whose commitment ensures events like this can happen.
