GGH Ladies Secure Podium Finish at Inaugural Wallace Running Festival

A new event hit the calendar on Saturday 11th October 2025, and naturally, our club was well represented. Jill Turner, Jill Aikman, and Melissa Magee took on the 50km challenge as a formidable relay trio and they didn’t disappoint. The team stormed to a superb 2nd place finish in the female category, earning well deserved applause from everyone at the club. Thank you to Jill for pulling the report together.

Following in the footsteps of legends

“On Saturday 11th October 3 GGH awoke at 05:58 from their period of rest and restoration to a bright and slightly chilly morning.

Fuelled and hydrated they set off to Stirling Cricket Club where the inaugural William Wallace Running Festival was to start. The festival consists of a 1 mile fun run, 10km, 50km and 70km routes. The longer routes both having relay options.

Registration and tracker collection was smooth. The race started at 0745 with the Ochil Hills and Wallace Monument looking glorious in the early sunshine. First GGH to run was Jill Turner who headed from the Cricket Club towards Bannockburn passing Bannockburn Cemetery where Alan Longmuir (founder of the Bay City Rollers) is buried. Jill climbed the 179m of Gillies Hill in Kings Park before heading to Cambusbarron and Stirling High School where she handed the tracker over to Jill Aikman.

The second GGH headed off to complete a hilly lap of Stirling Golf Club and the short sharp cobbly climb to Stirling Castle. Then followed a relatively flat (but very muddy!) route along the River Forth, passing Keir Estate where the SAS founder Sir David Stirling lived.

Handing the tracker over to the 3rd GGH making up this strong team, Melissa Magee, who’s route took her around Bridge of Allan Golf Club, up to Wallace Monument and along a riverside path past Cambuskenneth Abbey.

Ladies 50km relay results

Jill Turner and Jill Aikman joined Melissa for the final lap of the Cricket Club grounds, completing the 50km relay in 5 hours and 5 minutes and being the second ladies team to finish. We had a fantastic day and enjoyed working together to complete the run as part of a ladies team. A scenic route and would highly recommend to all. Hope to see more GGH take this on next year.

The William Wallace Running Festival returns on 10th October 2026.”

Thanks to Jill Aikman for the report.
