Junior Sprint Championship Races- 4th March 2025

Junior Sprint Championship Races

Ravenscraig Stadium 4thMarch 2025

It was another spectacular night of sprints under the lights at a chilly Ravenscraig stadium, where 48 young athletes competed over 100m and 200m (the u15/17 ran 300m).
In the u9s James Mooney was dominant with a double win, from runner-up Bradley Lafferty. In the girls races Leia Killeen took the honours in the 100m but fortunes were reversed in the 200m with Faith Bradley proving the stronger in the longer distance.
Lauryn McLaughlin was also in sparkling form in the u11 girls heats, but she was made to work for her wins by Gabriella Hamill. It was a blanket finish for 3rd place with Lily Dunn, just edging out Zara Cleishman and Lily McCall.
Elijah Taylor was clear in the u11 Boys races with Nathan Rogoz putting some distance from the rest of the field. The 3rd spot was closely contested in both distances, as Joshua Atkinson in the 100m and Sam Fulton in the 200m, taking the final podium positions.
The u13s girls heats were close battles all the way to the line with Stella McCabe just edging out Orla Trainer on both occasions. The 3rd spot was also very tight with Eve Hewitson dipping quicker than Isabel Lafferty in the 100m, but Isabel getting the better of Eve in the 200m.
The u15 and u17s girls started together, and as expected it was the sprinters who were to the fore. Summer Taggart powered her way to the front each time, with Abbie Learie doing just enough to hold off Gabrielle Simpson by a stride in both the 100m and 300m. All credit to the endurance runners who followed close behind with Lucy McGuinness claiming 4th.
The quickest heats of the night saw tremendous contests between Lewis Scott and Josh Deegan, with Lewis just holding the upper hand. Jackson Ikunna was 3rd in the short sprint, but the longer distance suited Jonathan Lamont, as his better endurance saw him break away for third.
Thanks to all the coaches, volunteers, especially the finish/start line judges, who rattled through the 14 races quickly and successfully.
