Kintyre Way Ultra Marathon
Saturday 11th May.
This year the Kintyre Way Ultra Marathon was contested over the section from Tayinloan to Tarbert. This is a 50.5 km route with 960m of climbing and is on a mix of beach, rough hill tracks and forest roads. The course is described in detail here. There are two options: solo and three-part-relay, with changeovers at Clachan and Skipness.
Kevin Craig and Greig Turner were representing the club at this race.
With Kevin Craig in the mix with the leaders on the climb from Clachan, he was led by Stu Miller who took the lead on the descent to the minor road into Skipness. From there, the gruelling up-and-over to Tarbert in the middle of the day saw Daniel Bond reeling in the leaders as he pulled up to 2nd place at the water station, then proceeded to fly along the forest road, knowing that Kevin Craig was the better descender. He needn’t have worried as even Kevin, using this as a training event for the West Highland Way race, couldn’t get near, admitting at the finish that if he wanted to win, he was going to have to need to get some lessons from Daniel.
Unfortunately Greig had to retire after suffering heat stroke at the last checkpoint.
