Danny McLaughlin delivered a stellar performance at the Lakesman Half Ironman in Keswick, demonstrating his resilience and athleticism in ideal conditions. The event kicked off at the break of dawn, with competitors diving into the freezing waters of Derwentwater at 6:30 AM. Danny braved the frigid temperatures and completed the 1.2 mile swim leg in an impressive 45 minutes and 4 seconds, navigating the route around the island with determination.

Upon emerging from the water, Danny faced a small incline leading into T1. He managed just under a ten-minute transition, swiftly preparing for the cycling leg of the race. The bike course took athletes out of the picturesque town of Keswick and through the Western Lake District in ideal weather conditions, providing a perfect backdrop for the 56-mile undulating ride. Climbing 2,369ft, Danny maintained a strong pace, clocking in a solid biking time of 3 hours and 9 minutes.
Transition 2 was brief, and Danny quickly moved on to the final segment of the race—the Half Marathon. The run course comprised four laps around Keswick running through superb countryside with views to the likes of Skiddaw. It was here that Danny encountered significant challenges. Despite being struck by cramps, he persevered, maintaining his form and pace throughout the laps. His determination paid off, as he crossed the finish line at Keswick Rugby Club, securing victory in the Men’s 65-69 age category.
Danny’s performance today was a testament to his grit and endurance. His final times are as follows:
