Scottish National Indoor Track & Field Championships

Inverclyde Sports Personality and Greenock Glenpark Harriers speed King Simon Okiti confirmed his status as one of Scotland’s fastest athletes securing a fabulous Bronze medal at the Scottish Athletics Senior & Under 18 Indoor Track & Field Championships 200m.

Simon, who made a major breakthrough last summer gaining successes throughout the UK and gaining selection to Scotland’s relay squad for the Commonwealth Games, tested his talents over the 200m at Emirates Indoor arena in Glasgow. With a highly competitive qualifying criteria,

Simon blasted from his blocks in his heat to power down the back straight striding ahead as the race developed, and entering the final few metres he was a clear winner securing a spot in the semi final. Similar to his heat, a dominant display in the semi final allowed Simon to cruise over the final 50m to qualify to contest a very competitive final.

In the final against the country’s fastest 200m runners, his powerful start ensured he was in a decent position cruising down the back straight, entering the final bend it was a three way contest as the trio of athletes ran clear with Simon securing his first individual National Senior medal, crossing the line in a superbly quick 22 seconds.

With his impressive performances Simon has secured an invite to the European Athletics Promotion event this weekend, where another step up in quality will be experienced.

Earlier in the day Josh Deighan went out in the new under 18 age group 800m. Despite just turning 15, the new policy change saw him having to tackle another very difficult event. In his heat Josh followed his race plan, and shadowed the more experienced athletes for the first 600m before there was an injection of pace, which Josh was able react to as he pushed into a challenging position before striking for home with an electric change of pace – securing a place in the final later in the day.

From the gun, the pack set of at a blistering pace with Josh going through his gears to remain in contention. As the race progressed the experience and maturity of his competitors began to show. Despite this Josh dug deep crossing the line ahead of his predicted finishing position with much valued experience gained.
